What qualifications do I need to become a direct-hire ALT?

A direct-hire ALT generally needs:

  • A university degree in any subject, or 12 years of schooling taught in English. Either can qualify for the work visa.
  • Some ALT or teaching experience, often in Japan. Training is often not provided.

A few roles ask for an education major or a teaching licence. A TEFL or TESOL certificate is rarely required, but it can strengthen an application.
