What is ALT Direct?

ALT Direct is a free, non-commercial service that maps which Boards of Education across Japan hire ALTs directly. ALTs in Japan can also anonymously share which prefectures they hope to work in, so BOEs can see where the interest is.

Why go direct?

You’re employed by the Board of Education itself, not a company. Communication is direct. Schedules, duties, and pay reach you first-hand.

How it works

Browse the map for current jobs. Add prefectures to your watchlist. Set up Recruit Me to anonymously show where you’d like to work.

Here’s what ALT Direct is not.

  • Not a dispatch company.
  • Not a placement agency.
  • Not taking a cut of your salary.
  • Not mediating applications.

Free for ALTs to search and apply. Free for BOEs to post. All applications go directly to the BOE through their own channels.

How direct-hire ALT jobs in Japan work

In Japan, Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) roles are filled in two main ways. Many go through dispatch companies, which employ the teacher and place them with a school. With a direct hire, the Board of Education (BOE) employs the ALT itself. ALT Direct maps the BOEs that have hired ALTs directly, so you can find them and apply through their own channels.

No direct-hire jobs near you yet?

Put yourself on the map. Tell Boards of Education you’d take a direct-hire ALT job in your area, anonymously. When enough ALTs do, a Board has a real reason to recruit directly near you.
